    Her Homelands Empty Her Homelands

It was days before they reached their destination, but eventually they finally arrived: Razelle's homeland. Travel had been mostly peaceful, undisturbed. Talon, however, had grown more subdued. His silent opinions, though they had always seemed so "loud", were no longer present. He had sensed the growing connection between Raz and his friend, a connection he didn't care for; one of understanding.

Quill was Talon's only friend, he refused to give him up. He began to like Raz less and less, completely ignoring her presence, interacting only with Quill. Though that wasn't much of a change, there were a few blatant, obvious times that he made sure to stand out, trying to convey his point directly.

Raz's irritation with the stupid foreign boy had progressed so far that she feared if he shot her one more glare she'd lop his hands of with her father's golden sword. Talon had taken to outright ignoring her, a fact that the flambouyant Ruik had trouble dealing with.

The deeper they went into the Barren Lands, the harder it got to keep her temper. The fire swirled and raged beneath her skin, feeding off of their homelands. The memories and nightmares came more and more often. The tension in her shoulders became more noticeable.

Though Quill now knew the source of most of the girl's pent up nerves, he still worried. He did all he could to help her keep her head. Though he knew nothing of the element burning inside her, he could see the emotions reflecting through her, and tried his best to be there. Still, it pained him that he couldn't do more to help.

After several days' travel, he approached her early one morning, just as they were rising.
"Talon seems to have found a good place to rest and restock. A massive silk city to the West, almost all Ruiken. It seems we really have reached your territory."
His voice quavered at this as he bent down, taking the dust-like soil into his hand, watching how it fell away. No longer did they walk on earth. This harsh land was built on ash. Though it made the soil fertile, few plants had the chance to grow in the sweltering heat and dry, desert-like conditions. Already Quill was beginning to sweat in this early morning light.

Talon showed no signs of discomfort, but he's just ninja like that.

For the first time in a while Raz grinned. Even though the Barren Lands now held many terrible memories for her, the desert was still her home and the Ruikens were still her people. The very thought of silken tents and great bonfires excited her. She watched in amusement as Quill struggled with the heat, sweat gathering on his brow. Raz thrived in it.

"Alright... a quick visit wouldn't hurt."

Talon led them mercilessly through the land... though the harshness was really all on Quill. He himself was actually impressed with Razelle's stamina, though he knew he shouldn't be surprised. She was a Ruik, after all. And it didn't make him like her any more.

Carefully, the trio navigated through the specific route Talon had travelled the nights before, approaching from the East. The Silk City laid out before them was indeed, massive. For they had been thriving and flourishing ever since their rival city had been wiped out.

With the fluid motions of a confident wanderer, Talon brought them straight through the streets to the main market area, guarding his valuables diligently under his cloak.

Raz didn't recognize the place immediately, although the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. The sight of cobalt and red clothe against a dimming gold sky was enough to set her heart ablaze. The city was so much like home...

    "Home" the fire echoed

It wasn't until the crowds in the marketplace began pointing and whispering that she began to feel a sense of dread well up inside of her. The fire snapped in warning.

A rugged guard suddenly stepped forward and nodded at Raz. She nodded in reply. "You're Althair's daughter, aren' you?"

"Yeah. You knew 'im?" Raz's Ruiken accent became more prominent as she slipped into the old habits of her breeding. Her shoulders squared and she dropped her manly swagger, the natural grace of a gypsy dancer consuming her movements.

"Hmm," The guard replied noncommittally. He gestured towards the largest tent a little ways off with a small, slight smile decorating his mug, "The King would love to see you. His father admired yours greatly."

Raz glanced questioningly at Quill. Should they go? She didn't see why not- they night even receive some parting gifts from the King is he kept to the Ruiken traditions of hospitality.

Quill smiled at the change in Raz. Seeing her move naturally, gracefully... it made his day. Just being back in a Silk City made her seem happier. When the guard approached, he was hesitant at first, But with Raz's gaze -- filled with confidence, indifference -- he felt confidence as well, and nodded. Why shouldn't they? What's the worst that could happen?

As they moved to follow the guard, Talon grabbed his arm, shaking his head. He seemed to have a sense of foreboding. However, Quill merely shook him off.

"Come on, Tal. Trust the lady for a change."

Those violet eyes glared, and it was even possible he growled, though it was barely audible enough to tell. Having no other choice, he dragged behind them warily.

Raz grinned as she glanced around, breathing in the smells of her people. I miss this... For a minute she contemplated just living there, giving up her quest and trying to be happy.

Th fire wailed and she knew that she couldn't just forget.

Every so often, the gaurd glanced to smile as he lead them through the crowd. Raz wondered if she had ever met this King before as a little girl. It was possible, seeing as how her father, too, had once ruled...

They reached their destination and the gaurd lifted the tent flap, "After you, m'lady."

She ignored the warning signs her body was sending her and slipped inside. Who she found inside made her insides ice over. The fire froze in her gut.

    "Hello, Razelle. 'Memeber me?"

Quill froze when he saw the change in Raz's expression. She had seemed so casual, so confident earlier. He noticed with relief that Talon had inched up closer, knowing that any dispute might be settled with his calm, forceful presence. Turning back to Raz, he watched her closely, wondering what her relationship was with this man.

"Hello, Kavon." Raz kept her spine straight and her voice neutral. Many years ago her father had tried to force her into a marriage with the man before her in order to form an alliance, but she had vehemently refused. Although she never personally saw the reaction her utter rejection had on the Prince- now King- of the rival Ruikens, Raz had heard by word of mouth that the boy was furious. Instinct kept Raz stiff, but... Surely he couldn't still hate her for wanting her freedom?

The years had done Kavon well. He sat regally, bathed in firelight with deep red, almost black hair and thin golden eyes. He watched her like a panther preparing to strike. With a small smile he inclined his head slowly, his gaze never leaving her face. She licked her lips nervously, the gooseflesh raising along her arms.

"How have you been, Razelle? I assume you know what has happened to your clan. It must have been hard to deal with." Although the words were said almost kindly they sent a sharp stab of anger and pain through Raz's chest. Kavon's stare glowed in the shadows od the tent and it put Raz on edge.

Her eyes darted to Talon nervously, wondering if he had any idea of what had been done to her family, before she realized that he couldn't understand a word of what was being said. Thank Azra.

Quill was now on edge. He could sense the tension in the air, and moved closer to Raz, hoping she might feel his presence. He noticed her glance at Talon, which confused him. Those two don't even acknowledge each other. Why is she looking at him? All the same, he knew Talon had a strengthening sort of presence in situations like this -- Quill could tell there was some bad history between these two. Talon's quiet confidence was something that couldn't be denied, whether he was fully informed or not. He knew his silent friend would react in a split second if anything started. Quill knew he and Raz were safe.

Kavon's smile smile twisted slightly at the sight of Quill's actions. He stood with the fluidity of a cat and stalked toward her. Raz kept her feet firmly planted, despite the fact that her eyes darted over his shoulder for an exit.

"Perhaps the lady will grace me with her presence for a moment?" The Ruik King offered his arm, tipping his head in the direction of his menacing gaurds and then gesturing to her friends when he noticed she planned on declining. Raz reluctantly took to his side with an uneasy scowl.

He smirked victoriously, a dark, nasty look in his eyes, "We do, after all, have some catching up to do."

Quill stood his ground, waiting expectantly. He refused to move, watching the two, as if to convey the message that he was with Raz, and anything said could be said to all of them. After the change in Razelle's demeanor at seeing this King, there was no way he was going to leave her alone. Talon stood behind him, a shadow, unnoticed, yet somehow still forbidding.

Kavon watched Raz's companion's frostily, his gaze settling on the older, more protective one, "Do you seriously have watch dogs now?"

Raz's scowl deepened at the mocking edge his voice had taken on. "No." Asshole.

The King rolled his eyes, waving a hand lazily. Instantly, several gaurds went to drag Quil and Talon off. Raz gnashed her teeth and heat tingled up her arms, but the other Ruiken seemed unfazed. He resolutely yanked her along behind him as he made a move to exit the tent.

Talon reacted almost at the same time as the gaurds, taking the first one down without any visible effort. He wasn't sure what was up with this Ruiken King, but he seemed like an ass. And his gaurds were way too pushy. He eyed Quill, making sure he was okay, then turned away from him, squaring smoothly with another guard. In his opinion, it was long past time to go.

Turning from that one, he spotted Raz being muscled away, and pushed past two more guards in pursuit. Quill could hold up by himself for a few moments. Besides, though Talon wasn't particularly fond of the girl, Quill would be upset if he didn't at least try and get her back.

"What the-" Raz glared indignantly at Kavon. His face was set in a dark mask, "What in Azra's name is wrong with you?" Razelle had not exactly been expecting a warm welcome from King Kavon once she realized it was he who ruled- she had rejected his offer of marriage, after all... But as he grip tighted convulsively around her wrist she couldn't help but think that his unhospitiality was a bit extreme. She could hear the noises of steel against steel somwhere within the tent and she worriedly thought of old Quil. That bastard had better survive...!

Kavon continued to drag her away from the crowds. The Ruikens' faces obediently turned away, ignoring the struggling girl he dragged. No one offered his victim help. Raz tried to dig her heels into the sand but for once her desert betrayed her and she continued to slide behind him.

Abruptly, Kavon stopped and shoved his face into hers,"You were supposed to be dead." At the furious words Raz forgot her struggle and froze in Kavon's grip.

    "What?"

"You were supposed to die, dammit! How could Raschek betray me like this? They said that you would be dead!" Spittle flew from Kavon's mouth and his eyes were wild, haunted. His voice was that of a man whose dream had been snatched from him, whose efforts had been all for naught.

Pieces fell into place and something clicked inside Raz's mind. Instantly, she began to burn. Brighter, brighter, burning. The fire howled under her skin, tearing its way through flesh and setting her whole body aflame. Even her hair seemed to flicker with rage.

    "It was you!"

Talon had shoved through the crowds of Ruikens, pursuing the king and his captive. As he noticed the ignorance, the indifference, of the people, his anger grew. Suddenly, he was determined to rescue Raz not only because of Quill's warm heart, but because of the unfeeling and ironic coldness of this Silk City. Talon had always prided himself in being stoic, in being unbreakable, but this was crossing the line.

Ahead, as the crowds thinned and all but died out, Talon finally caught up to his targets. The king had dragged her away from the public area, and was now yelling at her. And it obviously made her angry, as he saw oh-so-observantly that she was on fire. Literally. Narrowing his eyes, Talon moved silently behind the kind and grabbed his shoulder, expecting an easy kill. It was, after all, only polite to give the man warning before his final breath.

Kavon sensed the person behind him long before he felt the hand on his shoulder. It was only when his opponent touched him that he dropped Raz's wrist and leapt back a ways, fire lighting his hands. His flames didn't seems quite as strong and ferocious as Raz's, but they twisted in an almost snake-like fashion, deceptively calm. His face had settled into a hard sneer and he cocked an eyebrow at the cloaked stranger, inviting the fight.

Raz, meanwhile, had begun to fight for control. The anger inside of her seemed to take the place of the blood in her veins, and she realized that she was losing herself to the ever-present hunger. The thought of the silks and clothes and wood all over the city, read to light up and be devoured, made her conciously fight to pull the fire back under her skin.

Talon set himself, at first surprised by the king's awareness. Maybe next time he should actually try to be quiet; this guy was ready for a fight. The fire in Kavon's hands put Talon on guard, immediately settling into a defensive position. He tucked his hands into his cloak, waiting and ready for his opponents next move. To him, this was a game, much like chess, only faster. The king would move, then him. They would go back and forth until, eventually, someone gets checkmate. And as far as he remembered, only the king could be put into check.

For half a second, he spared a glance in Razelle's direction, his eyebrows furrowing. Was she okay? Fire still blazed over her skin, and a look of pure intensiy burned in her expression. Quill was gonna kill him if she spontaneouly imploded or something like that.

Deciding to deal with her later, he realized his glance had broken his concentration, and shifted his gaze swiftly back to the other Ruiken before him.

Kavon did not take well to the foreigner's glance in Raz's direction. He was not jealous so much as possessive. Raz was merely an object in his mind, something that he had been denied and he now wanted to obtain. With a dark scowl he swung a burning fist at Talon, testing the boy's abilities. His other hand went for the concealed knife at his hip.

Raz sucked in a deep breath and concentrated on thinking happy thoughts. Unfortunately, most happy thoughts included her family, and their burnt and bloodied faces flashed before her eyes. With a strangled yelp she shoved it away, but the fire caught the image and pulled on her fury of it. It licked upwards, twirling at her feet and spreading across dry sand, reaching for Kavon.

    Not King
, it howled, No King. No Rule. We Rule. We hunger for King-flesh.

Talon's eyes narrowed, and his lips curved ever-so-slightly into something that faintly hinted at a sadistic, indifferent grin. It had been awhile since anyone had thought to use their element in a fight with him. Fire would be a fascinating match to work with. He dodged the man's fist, but failed to notice the knife being drawn, as it was something much more dire that caught his attention: flames.

These were not the sharp, stinging candleflames of Kavon, but something more powerful, more wild. And they were coming from Raz. Talon wasn't sure if she knew he was over here as well, or if she even cared at all, but those flames were suddenly his first priority. He shifted his weight so he could jump away if necessary, but still kept full access to the king in front of him, sliding to the Ruiken's left and attacking, prodding for a sign of weakness.

Kavon's wide eyes registered the fire moments after he dodged one of Talon's blows. Distractedly, he noted that Razelle had become much more powerful than he remembered. His main focus was on the foreigner, who was much quicker than Kavon had realized. Carelessly, the Ruiken King stepped into the fire as he rushed at Talon, foolishly thinking that his own gift for fire would protect him. The sharp pain, searing, searing pain that greeted him was a shock.

Raz sucked in air through her teeth and grinned viciously when Kavon stumbled and howled. Her fire grasped at his, lapping it up greedily and humming with delight. After a moment of victory Raz remembered the situation and once again reigned the fire in. This time, it came back willingly, still ravenous but momentarily happy with its taste of Kavon's skin.

Talon leapt back from the king, his eyes going wide when the man cringed. Wasn't this man supposed to be one of the most powerful Ruikens alive? How was he being affected by his own element? Refusing to spend too long pondering, Talon took this moment to get out of there. In one swift motion, he by Razelle's side. For a second he paused, not wanting to startle her, but then he placed his hand gently on her wrist. If they were going to get back to the old man and escape, it had to be now.

Raz felt Talon's fingers at her bruised wrist and started. She was once again stumbling along, only this time she was more than wiling to follow and leave the burning King behind. They were close to where that had left Quil and Raz hoped that they could somehow grab him and run. She wondered at their chances of escape, then realized that wondering had gotten her nowhere in the past and that she always managed to pull through in some way.

Not wasting time to run around to the entrance of the king's tent, Talon drew a scimitar out of his cloak and sliced open the silk, leaping through into the now empty main room. Where was everyone? Did they have Quill?

No, no they didn't, he realized. For there, right in front of him, Quill lay on the floor, a stab wound blatant through his chest. He was dead. For many long seconds, Talon stood frozen, waiting for the old man to hop up and run away with them, praying he was pretending, faking, for some clever reason. But those hopes were squashed immediately. Talon knew there was no chance now.

When he finally had control of his limbs again, he stepped forward and fell to the ground. Quill and he and travelled together for years. They had done everything together, shared everything. Quill was his only companion, his brother, his father... a look of determination came over Talon's eyes, a look of fierce disregard of consequences. A dangerous look, the kind that disregards everything but it's intent.

Talon placed his hands onto Quill's chest and pressed them down. Then he moved the other up and closed the man's eyes. He pressed on his chest again. Nothing happened. He looked confused, hurt, his cool for once breaking. What was wrong with him? It was stupid to try such a thing, everyone knew it didn't work on the dead. Nobody has the power to bring them back. His eyes starting to grow red around the rims, Talon stood and motioned to Raz with a blood-soaked hand, knowing they had to leave before--what was that pain?

Wrenching forward, he felt it. Sharp, agonizing, nauseating. A straight, steel scimmy was yanked back out of his chest. He stumbled forward a little and threw one of his own knives backward over his shoulder, praying it would hit his target. Where was Razelle? As much as he hated her right now--he somewhat blamed her for the death of his friend--he knew Quill would turn in his grave if Talon left her now. Dragging his feet forward, he finally caught her eye. He would need her to get them out of there. With this burning, fiery pain shooting through his body, he could barely remember his own name.
