Kel didn't want to open her eyes to greet the intruder. Moments before she had been so comfortable in Reid's arms and then some peasant girl decided to come in and ruin Kel's few moments of peace. She could her Reid's commanding voice asking the woman questions and the soft, almost whispered replies, but she didn't move, couldn't move. She felt like she was dozing off as the King of the Court stroked her hair, the pounding in her temples drowning out all noise in the hall.

"Reid..." She moaned. Her head ached fiercely, the heat of magic burning beneath her skin. She felt her friend's fingers still against her cheek. Her own digits gripped his shirt tightly in her fists, tugging and she began to writhe in hopes of cooling the fire that was building inside of her, "Reid!"

She felt herself being jostled, felt herself being moved, felt cool lips soothing the skin at her temples and whispering words in her ear.

"Hang on, Kel. Where is the healer? You'll be fine, Ke- where is he, dammit?!"

The world exploded behind her eyelids and Kel fell limp.

((don't know where this came from... just more attempts at advancing plot and stirring up drama! Yay!))

"Kelenthe?! Miss Kelenthe!!" Annabelle ran after the small group of people that had stolen away the one familiar face in this sea of unknown, but the hordes blocked her way, and she was lost again. Hopeless and completely exhausted, she simply let herself fall to the ground and kneeled there, her eyes closed, swaying a little. She pulled the coin of Azra out of her bodice, letting it hang boldly over her neck, almost completely ignorant of her surroundings. All she wished for right now was someone, something, familiar, to ease her racing thoughts, which seemed to have no pattern or form to them anymore.

My Lord,

The subjects you mentioned in our earlier conversation have been taken care of. The primary concern is probably already on her deathbed, calling for eternal sleep. The other one will be out of our way in any matter of days, even sooner, it may seem, if she is driven so far as to to end it herself. Without a doubt, the Sanxio spell gave us the perfect results. Clever of you as always, my Lord.

Davyn had only just been entering the great hall when his cousin's screaming reached his ears and he caught sight of a pale and shaken Reid attempting to calm her down. Her skin pulsed with magic and the awful scent of it lingered in the air. His own fear drove him as he shoved through the hordes, all worried outlaws who had come to know- or, at the very least know of- Kelenthe Bernares.

"Reid! What's going on?" Davyn vaulted onto the dias just as the the other man began to descend it at a rapid pace, Kel cradled in his arms, her fist still firmly settled in his tunic.

"Sanxio spell. Gods be damned!" Reid's furious pace almost left Davyn in the dust, "If she had only told me sooner that someone... I could have... I would have... Oh, Azra save her!"

Davyn watched the distraught King in shock. Never before had he seen Reid lose his compsure so fully, so-

A lump on the ground tripped Davyn up and he stumbled, wincing at the small "oof" that the object her had run into released. Oops. He glanced down with a sheepish, if not slightly distracted smile and muttered a quick, "Sorry" ready to take off after Reid when he paused and did a double-take.

"Annabelle?"

At the sound of her name, Annabelle glanced up, squinting. At first, her face showed no recognition of the figure above her, but then her eyes widened and she jumped up, the coin of Azra bouncing on her chest.

"Davyn!"

Annabelle's joy at a familiar face was overwhelming. Finally, she wasn't completely lost anymore! If she hadn't still remembered her senses of decency, she would have hugged him. However, though she began to make the motion, she quickly restrained herself, swaying slightly on her feet.

"Did you see her? Kelenthe! Kelenthe is hurt..."

Her voice had a rambling edge to it, but she trailed off before her words became too jumbled. Though she was standing stilll, she managed to trip slightly over her feet, barely catching herself.

"They took Kel... and Rudy, he's alone... outside."

Her eyes were clouded, confused, but she stayed awake, fighting the exhaustion of almost a week of sleepless nights.

Davyn stared at the disheveled girl for a moment, taking in her swaying form and her soiled clothing.

"Rudy...?" He glanced at her drawn face again and sighed, "Nevermind. Let's just take you to... wherever they took Kel. Damn Reid for not waiting up." With that he took her hand to lead her away.

For a moment, Annabelle simply stood there. It took her a second to realize Davyn was trying to lead her somewhere, and she followed him until they arrived in a quieter, more private back area of the Court. The room they had carried Kel to was very out of the way, where nobody would come bother her or the healers.

Pulling away from Davyn, Annabelle shuffled over to the lifeless-looking girl, kneeling down next to her. She took in the healers that Reid had called, staring blankly, then rested her head on the side of the bed, near Kel's hand.

"I'm sorry, Miss Kelenthe," she murmured. "You're going to get better, I know it. But I'm still sorry. I should've known they knew about us. I should've come to warn you when they first started watching me." Her eyes fluttered closed for a second, matching the drowsy, half-conscious rhythm of her words, to a point where she seemed almost drunken. Then she dozed off, still kneeling, next to the daring rogue-girl who had once seemed so invincible.

"What the fuck?" A moment seemed to elsapse between the time that Kel was writhing in Reid's arms and when she binked open her eyes to come face to face with darkness. Utter silence surrounded her, and she spread her arms out wide, stumbling forward- what she believed to be forward, at least- in hopes that she could find a wall to follow.

Nothing. She reached and grasped nothing but empty air.

"Hello?" Kel tried squinting as she blindly walked in the black, but she couldn't see even inches in front of her. She was begining to fear that she had gone blind when a little flash up ahead caught her attention. With a triumphant oath Kel ran for it.

As she drew near she stopped cold. The shadows were begingin to recede as she got closer, hallways were begining to take shape, looking just a bit too familiar for her tastes, the monsturous bronze door loomed before her...

The entrance was flung open this time and haltingly Kel made her way inside. Cool air rushed to meet her as she scanned the ritual chambering, taking in the runes carved on the walls and memorizing them as best she could. The onyx Hellgate rippled in the center of the room and Kel stiffened, holding her breath. Something formed beneath the mirror-like sheet of magic, its glowing eyes watching her. She attempted to slide a foot backwards, to run away, but its gaze caught her and froze her in place.

The creature began to twist, to fold into itself and take the shape of a man. Kel tried to make out his features but those eyes refused to release her.

Ah. Hello, Ms. Bernares.

And then she was awake, staring up into the familiar face of Reid.

"Thank Azra!" Reid sighed, leaning his forehead against Kelenthe's. He felt her eyelashes flutter against his cheek, her ragged breathing on his lips. She was alive, she was alright, she was there, in his arms. A wide smile broke over Reid's worried features and Kel mirrored it, the last of the fear gone from her face.

"So... whaddid I miss?" Her eyes glittered as she knew the answer.

Reid nipped her lips lightly, "Never do that to me again. Ever."

It was only then that Kel began to notice the pressure in her hand, as if someone was squeezing it. She turned her grin to who she thought was Davyn but turned out to be... "Annabelle?"

Annabelle jolted awake at the sound of her name. It could have been hours or only minutes, she didn't know, but she already felt slightly better, though she knew the sags remained under her eyes and she still looked terrible. What she did know was that she hadn't had one dream in her short sleep, no nightmares at at all. Whatever had been plagueing her, it hadn't found her here... yet.

"Miss Kelenthe, oh you're awake!"

As soon as she processed what was going on, she jumped forward and hugged Kel. She had felt almost responsible for her attack, as if she had somehow indirectly caused it, though she knew that was ridiculous. Suddenly self-conscious, she stepped back, realizing there was another man in the room.

"Umm... it's a pleasure to meet you, your Majesty... Highness... Sir. I am Annabelle Farraday, I met Kelenthe a week or so back."

The coin of Azra still hung over her breast, shining in the dim light, a medallion never before worn by a noble such as her.

Reid stifled a smirk at the girl's embarassed rambling and earned himself a smack on the head from Kel. He watched curiously as the coin of Azra swung from her neck. Where could she have possibly gotten that?

After a moments contemplation Reid set the thought aside and went to greet his guest.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Annabelle. Just call me D'Accord, must here do." Reid gallantly lifted the girls hand to his lips and delighted in the flush that spread across her cheeks.

He also delighted in Kel's angry little scowl. He shot her a sly grin, "Something wrong, pet?" His hand dropped Annabelle's and went to trace Kel's collarbone.

The other girl turned her head away with a haughty sniff, watching him from the corner of her eyes, "You're a terrible, terrible tease, you know that?"

Reid nuzzled his face into the crook of her neck, breathing in deeply and closing his eyes. It seemed as if he had forgotten the presence of the noble girl beside the bed, "Only with you, sweetheart."

Immediately embarrassed to be witnessing such an intimate moment, Annabelle excused herself and stepped outside, her green eyes scanning the hallway curiously. She didn't want to get herself lost or in any trouble, so she carefully retraced her steps back to the entrance she had arrived at the night before, approaching to see Rudy still tethered to his post.

"Oh, you poor boy," she murmered to the small bay stallion. "I should have gotten you somewhere safe first. I'm so sorry."

She stood there for several minutes, stroking his nose and wondering where she could possibly keep him.

Davyn had left Kel's room only minutes after Anabelle fell asleep. The way Reid watched his cousin made him uncomfortable, and the shallow gasps of pain that she released every so often drove the feared pirate to slink away with his head bowed and his tail between his legs. There was something about seeing Kel so vulnerable that made him cringe and want to cry.

Anabelle, too, had driven him from the place. Her soft face, gentle in sleep, had been too tempting. His fingers iched to touch her cheek.

So, here he was, wndering around outside of the Court of Thieves. It was just his luck that he would run straight into the thing he was running from.

Anabelled Faraday was murming to a lovely horse, and the sight of the pair of them, animal and woman glowing in the moonlight, made his knees go weak.

Gathering his wits, Davyn closed his gaping mouth and cleared his throat, setpping from the shadows, "Who's that you got there?"

Hearing the voice behind her, Annabelle started and gasped, jumping around. Seeing it was only Davyn, she immediately calmed and smiled, welcoming his familiar face. She motioned her horse, inviting him to come say hi.

"This is Rudy," she softly, returning to the stallion's nose. Here and there, she moved her hands up and twisted his mane a little bit. "He's gotten me through all sorts of trouble lately, haven't you, mister?"

With care and familiarity, she moved to the stallion's side and loosened his girth, giving him a little more breathing room. She still felt terrible about leaving him outside all night.

Davyn grinned at the fondness in Anabelle's horse as she stared at Rudy. It occured to him that he should probably offer to take the horse to the stables, but for the life of him he couldn't get the words out. He ended up just muttering something about putting the animal to bed and proceeded to stare at his feet.
