Kel scowled darkly and rolled her eyes, "I was just about to leave, anyway. I could've handled it." Ha, not. Despite herself and thier situation, Kel began to giggle. Her laughs built until they echoed down the hallways. In all that confusion, she had forgotten about Davyn, and she could only imagine the look on his face when she told him of all the trouble she had gone through. I met the Prince, made a friend, and had a run-in with High Mages and a Hellgate. In all my years of troublemaking this night definitely takes top place.

Catching onto Kelenthe's fit of giggles, Annabelle joined herself, leaning against the wall until she had to clutch her stomach. How had all of this come about? Maybe she should come to royal balls more often! Without letting up her fits of giggles, she too seated herself on the floor, exhausted from their flight.

At first, Arem watch the young ladies' antics with a self-mature silence, waiting patiently for them to get ahold of themselves. However, after watching to two erupt into fits of giggles for almost five minutes, the scene was so funny that he couldn't resist chuckling himself. He leaned back on the floor for a few moments, but never lost his cool. Eventually he cut himself off and stood up, leaning casually against the wall with one leg propped against it. Somehow, his clothes and hair had retained their perfection during their flight, and he still looked as royal and majestic as ever.

"So, Kel. It's okay if I call you that, right? What are you doing here anyway? I'm not going to throw you in the dungeon or anything ridiculous like that, but you have attracted my curiosity."

Again, his voice was cocky and self-important, assuming he could simply call her by a familiar name. With one eyebrow raised, he appeared to be the picture of an arrogant royal, one hand poised as if her were examining his fingernail, though his eyes rested solely on Kel.

Kel scowled tightly at his arrogant tone, but spared him the insult, seeing as how he was sparing her life. With a sigh she tilted her head and silently studied the Prince across from her. If he weren't so annoying, I'd be hard-pressed to find a more attractive man. Ugh.

As she reached her conclusions, she pursed her lips and opened her mouth to reply, "Well, I came to bust my adored cousin-" here she rolled her eyes- "out of the dungeon." And if you try and stp me I'll knock you out and hide your body in one of those huge ornamental vases I saw a while back.

With that she sprang to her feet, dusted herself off and sauntered away to find Davyn, an extra swing in her hips. She didn't glance back, but she could feel their stares, and she wondered at their thoughts. Her own ran over the Prince a few times (because he was quite good looking, damn him) before turning to the scene she had witnessed in the tunnels. What could those mages need with a Hellgate?

An even more important question tugged at the back of her mind: how could they control what the Hellgate would release?

Behind Kel, Arem let out a loud chuckle, calling after her.

"One: My dear, you are heading in the wrong direction. Two: What might be the name of this oh-so-adored cousin?"

He emphasized the words my dear, trying to get under her skin. He wondered how a pretty young thing like her ended up alone this late in life (she was obviously not spoken for). Had her parents not engaged her? Perhaps she was like his little Annabelle, stubborn, waiting for the right man. With those thoughts, he turned back to the other young lady, helping her stand up.

"You've had quite the adventure, my lady. Should I arrange a room for you to stay here tonight?"

After she shook her head no, Arem returned his attention back to the truant, awaiting her answer to his inquisition.

When the Prince offered to put Annabelle up for the night, she was baffled with his generosity, but immediately shook her head, a little dramatically. There was no way she would let herself stay in the same complex as this man for longer than she had to. He was courting her, after all!! She was grateful when he shifted his attention back to the other, and she too was curious who this cousin of Kel's was.

Kelenthe lolled her head lazily in their direction, flashing her quicksilver grin, "I'm not exactly sure what he's going by now a-days. His real name's Davyn, although you two may known him as-" Her eyes took on a mischevious glint, lighting up her face, "Captain Zephyr of the Thunderboalt."

At Kel's expectant, way-too-blasé statement, Arem crossed his arms, huffing in an impressed, high-and-mighty sense.

"Oh, that guy? We've had him locked up for almost two days now. He had the nerve to anchor into the East Harbor, right starboard of the Vasili family's personal cargo ships. I wonder what he might have been doing there?"

Arem's voice was fecitious, sarcastic. Before he gave the chance for Kel to move again however, he continued.

"... But I think, that just maybe, between being dragged in here and branded as a pirate, he might have learned his lesson well enough. You'll probably find him in the last cell, right side. His right arm might still be a little numb."

He didn't expect her to get past the jail guards, but if she succeeded, he'd be impressed. Thoroughly impressed. He flicked his head down the hallway, still holding that arrogant expression.

"Take your first left, your second left, and your seventh right. Then you'll find a wood and iron-barred door at the end of the hallway. Take a left at the bottom of the stairs, unless you would like to end up in the old torture rooms. Even in their abandoned antiquity, they're quite a gruesome sight to stumble upon."

Acting completely ignorant to the blatant directions he had handed over, the Prince turned back to Annabelle, letting her take his arm.

"Now, I do believe it is time my lady and I return to the party."

When Prince Vasili referred to her as his lady, Annabelle blushed. How could he be so forward, yet so suave? She wasn't sure she completely liked it, though she had to admit, he was quite a character. Her eyes were, however, focused on Kelenthe. She stepped forward quickly and took both of the other girl's hands in hers.

"I do hope we meet again, Miss Kelenthe. You're the most daring young woman I've ever met, and I would look forward to any day I could spend in your presence!"

Her voice was sweet, admiring, for once not using that sincere tone to manipulate. She dropped Kel's hands and stepped back to Arem.

    "Shall we go, then?"

Kel watched Annabelle in suprise before a slow, soft smile unfurled and set her face aglow. Never before had Kel felt this lighthearted, this happy. Never before had she wanted to be kind to someone like this, wanted to have the prefct wors to reply with. Instead she settled for a very gentle and very sincere, "Me too. I'd love to see you again too."

She carefully tugged her hands away before shooting a last glare at the prince and tossed a quick jab at him over her shoulder, "You, however, I hope to never see again." She took off (in the right direction this time) with her kindness forgotten and her fury slowly rising at the memory of his smirk. A bit of sorrow stabbed at her gut, too, as she thought of poor Davyn being branded. Dear gods, he was going to be quite unhappy with for being to late to stop that.

By the time the two returned to the ball, many of the nobles and patrons had already departed. The sky was darkening and the sun was beginning to disappear. A few higher nobles wished Arem a peaceful night before setting out. A few others, however, still lingered around the tables, taking full advantage of the free drinks. Though on a much grander scale, Annabelle came to the realization that these royal balls were just like any other.

She allowed the Prince to escort her to the drive, where her carriage was pulling around thanks to the swiftness of the royal stablehands and her own chauffer.

"Thank you for inviting me, Prince Vasili," her smile was polite, but she quickly dropped his arm and distanced herself, so as to escape to her carriage.

Allowing the young lady to squirm away, the Prince let out a half-hearted smile.

    "Please, call me Arem."

It was a familiar gesture, but one he was willing to take with any of his subjects, so long as it was used appropriately. However, he hoped Miss Farraday would take the request to heart. She was a nice, pretty woman, and he enjoyed a woman who didn't give in too easily. He watched her carriage until it disppeared over the seemingly endless drive, then returned to the castle.

Instead of seeking out his father as he usually would after such a long, eventful night, he went stright up to his bedchamber, quickly throwing on his nightclothes. Again, the voices, the mentalities, of the High mages in the tunnels rang through his head, and he shivered. This would be a memory, he knew, that would have a lasting effect on him.

He wondered if, right now, the truant-girl had been discovered yet. Somehow, he regretted giving her directions. Maybe she would have saved herself the trouble and left if he had let her lose her way. No, then someone else would have discovered her. Though anything might be better than the treatment of the jailguards. Letting out a sigh, he forced his eyes closed, trying to fast-forward the time until daylight.

Kel managed to make it to the dungeon before any disasters struck. It was only when she stepped into the torchlight after scanning the area that she felt it: the crackle of magic lifted the hairs at the nape of her neck and burned at her skin. She unsheathed her knives instantly and stood on gaurd, but when nothing happened she proceeded until she reached her cousin's cell.

"Davyn," She hissed through the bars, still wary, "Davyn, you ass, get over here."

Davyn's head snapped up and a wide grin split his face, "Jeez, Kelenthe, could you have been any slower?"

Kel rolled her eyes and began to work at th lock with her daggers, her eyes shifting back and forth, scanning nervously. She nibbled her lip between her teeth as the swell of magic shocked up her spine. Whatever- no,whoever that was it was getting closer, "Shut it and be grateful, Dav, you have no idea what I've been through tonight."

After laying for what seemed like an hour, wide awake, Arem sat up and glanced out his window. Judging by the light and the moon, which regrettably hadn't moved the slightest, it had been fifteen minutes at most. Growling to himself the whole way, he redressed himself in more casual attire and swung himself out the door, hating what he was doing the whole time.

Still, he wouldn't be able to sleep until he knew the fate of the truant, Kelenthe. Muttering minor spells and curses under his breath, he shuffled across the complex.

In a wisp of golden smoke, three large, burly-looking men materialized, blocking the only exit to the dungeon. The three of them were well-built and had an abundance of facial hair, though what face that could be seen through it would make one assume the three were identical triplets, which is exactly what they were.

Shaking their heads and chuckling darkly, they moved forward slowly, keeping in perfect step so as to never leave a hole for the girl to slip through. Their shirtless bodies rippled with muscle, shining and slick.

"What's this?" One asked the others, seemingly joyous. "It seems we have some adventure tonight."

"If you're seeing what I'm seeing, Gus, then I do believe you're right." Answered another.

The third one, the largest, simply smiled, displaying crooked teeth and a dumb, eager expression.

They moved forward, closing Kelenthe into the corner, making snide comments about her body.

"Azra's tits!" Kel roared, and for the millionth time that night cursed her luck. Davyn had taken over her work at picking the lock, so for the moment it seemed she was alone. Usually, Kel was good in a fight, but she was, at the moment, still dressed in a large, poofy white gown that tripped her up more often than not and had surrender her knives to Davyn so he could free himself. Not the mention the fact that she was outnumbered, outweighed, and outsized, "Hurry it up, Dav!" She commanded, searching her opponents for weaknesses.

At, least, she thought, I'm in the corner so none of them can go at my back. And maybe if I distarct them long enough Davyn can escape and get 'em while they're preoccupied.

The moment after she had some to her solution all rational thought flickered off and Kel surrendered to her training, the Bernares instincts rushing up and consuming her until she was nothing but ruthless, quick, and ready for a fight. She dimmed her senses until her sight centered on her tragets and she watched for her slightest movements, waiting to charge or to dodge.

The biggest of the brothers grinned and slammed his foot into the iron bars of Davyn's cage, still keeping his eyes on Kelenthe as the thick iron bent under the pressure like taffy candy, jamming the door. He clapped and laughed, proud of himself.

The other two rolled their eyes, then began to close in on the girl.

"Ya know, you got real nice body," the first one, Gus, commented. "It's a shame we're gonna have to mess it up." He chuckled, cracking his knuckles. "Though I bet it could be of some use to us first."

Reaching the back of the dungeon, Arem absorbed the scene in front of him. It seemed he had arrived right on time. The gaurds, oblivious to his presence, were taking their time, hoping to have some fun with the girl. He leaned against the wall, debating whether to interfere.

Though something inside him was nagging, demanding he interfere immediately, he held on a moment. The truant could take care of herself, she acted as if she did it all the time. It was when Gus, the only decently intelligent one, vocalized his intentions that Arem snapped.

"Gentlemen." His voice resounded through the cramped space, echoeing off the stone. It was harsh, reprimanding. Maybe even angry. His eyes flared up, daring them to challenge him. "I think it's time we left this fair lady alone, don't you think?"

Turning around, the gaurds stepped aside, each wearing a guilty look. One spoke up, still keeping himself in range of Kelenthe.

"Your majesty, she was attemptin' to spring the captain 'ere! We was jus' trying to get 'er cornered!"

Scanning their faces, Arem kept his expression hard, composed.

"Yes, that she was. And it seems she would have gotten away, too. You underestimate the strength of this woman, my friends."

Stopping between the gaurds and Kelenthe, his expression still fierce, he tried to catch her gaze, to see what she was making of the situation.

"My noble lady, thank you for doing this favor for me. It seems my gaurds do indeed require replacement. Your generosity is appreciated." Shifting his gaze to the guards, he motioned the door of the cell. "It also seems they have a blatant disregard for castle property."

After motioning the men to bend the door back, he dimissed them, leaving all but the largest one looking utterly confused and afraid as they wisped away. Turning toward Kelenthe, his arms still sternly behind his back, his expression softened, just a smidge.

"Take Davyn and get out of here. I expect never to see you again."

Kel stared at him a long, long moment, completely and utterly baffled. Hadn't he sent her down here so she could be? Hadn't he been hoping she would be?

She stared into his eyes, searching for her answers and found only gentleness. In those moments he was both beautiful to her and utterly vexing. He had interfered with her fight, and yet he seemed to want nothing in return.

What an annoying man. Kel's dazzling smile made its appearance, despite her thoughts, "Thank you." She muttered sincerely, an embarassed blush spreading across her face at her need for rescue. With that she spun on her heel and set to work on Davyn, ignoring the Prince' presence.

Immediately, Arem's eyes returned to their commanding, unattatched coldness, and he leaned against the nearest empty cell, waiting for her and her cousin to depart before he himself left.

"As I said, you would have gotten away."

He remained slient, watching simply to make sure they got out, hating himself every moment he stayed put. Am I now turning against my people as well? To himself, he shook his head. No, they are my people, too. Again something like a quiet growl slipped out of his throat, and he moved his eyes to the wall, glaring away from the two, willing them to hurry up and disappear.

Kel felt Arem's anger at her back and her quick fingers picked up the pace. Davyn watched her with raised eyebrows, darting glances between her and the Prince, "So this is the company you keep now, Kel?"

"Shut up, you stupid pirate. I should kill you for getting me dragged into so much shit. I mean, honestly, Dav-" With a click the door swung open and Kelenthe tugged Davyn out and began hustle out the door, barely sparing Arem a glance and a quick goodbye. As grateful as she was to him, she still had trouble liking his cocky attitude. She just wanted to get home and pretend this night never happened, maybe find a nice man to entertain her for a while... at the very least buy her a few drinks.

Davyn relaxed his tense posture as he and his cousin slipped outside the gates of the castle, homeward bound. Kelenthe bounced along beside him, seemingly deep in thought.

"Hey, Dav, how do you suppose we stop by the Court of Thieves?" Kel's wicked grin flashed white in the dark, "I want to find Reid and have a bit of fun tonight. Gods know I deserve it."

As soon as the two had slipped outside, Arem broke his composure. With a mix between a growl and a yell, he grabbed the hanging cell door and threw it shut, letting a resounding crash ring through the hall. He jerked around, biting his lip. Then, without a pause, he walked straight back to his bedchamber, his pace impossibly quick. Vainly contemplating the possible erasure of his own memory, he finally got some sleep.
