After the Fire Empty After the Fire

Post  Halite Fri Nov 06, 2009 3:03 pm

For two days, Talon remained unconscious, ignorant of the world. For eventually, his bleeding stopped. Whether it was healing or he was merely out of blood, one would be hard-pressed to know.
When he did finally, slowly, become aware again, all the events came flooding back to him. He curled up, then growled in pain as the movement jarred his wound.

The first thing Raz did was find the pair shelter. She walked for miles before finding the subtle traces of a path in the sand, and almost missed the Ruik markings that indicated a road. Exhausted, she followed it, dragging her unconcious friend along until they reached a small oasis.

It was passably sized, a slim ring of knobby trees and thick green plants. The abandoned tents milling around led Raz to believe that it may at once have been a trade post. She eagerly relieved herself of her burden, laying him flat on the carpets inside the largest silk structure and searching through the others for supplies. For two days she lived in an almost numb state, bathing in the small body of water at the center of the camp and feeding off of the leftovers of whoever had come before her.

Talon remained pale and unmoving. Hesitantly, Raz tended his wound with her own medicines, hoping the Ruik healing balms would work on someone from an indiscrimate clan. At one point she even almost removed his headpiece to feed him, but settled for giving him water through a cleaned smoking pipe she had found.

Talon jumped awake, on his feet in seconds. How had he gotten here? Where was Quill? Immediately, the recent events returned to him, and he sat down again. Crossing his legs, he glanced around, his eyes seeking out who he now knew to be his... rescuer, he supposed.

He spotted Raz across the small road that led through the place. It was easy to see they were still in Ruik territory, but at least they were away from that last City. It seemed Raz had known the king--perhaps the girl had more influence in her people than he had originally assumed.
Rising to his feet, slower this time, without the rush that had originally hit him, he shuffled over to where she was.

The girl in front of him, as he saw her, was a hardened Ruiken. She was pretty, and had a dancer's grace, yet tried constantly to seem tough. She obviously no longer had a family, though what happened he was unable to guess. He assumed it had something to do with this history that seemed to be unravelling itself before him. All the same, he couldn't help but blame her for what had happened. After all, if Quill had not invited her along, would they even have come to this place? If they had not been associated with her, would they have been assaulted?

Deep in contemplation, his eyebrows furrowed, he stood by silently, watching and waiting to be noticed, though right now he wasn't quite sure he wanted to be.

Raz noted Talon's approach with the same odd calm that had wrapped around her since their escape from Kavon. Her blank gaze turned down to study her open palms. The sight of her birthmark, however, broke through her dark thoughts and she flinched away. Raz clenched her fists tightly to hide it away from the world, from her.

When she spoke for the first time in two days her voice was rough and monotone, as blank as her eyes, "Why is it always my fault? I don't even know what I did the last time and still everyone had to go and die." Somewhere in the back of her mind, Raz thanked Azra for a listener who could not understand a word of what she said.

Hearing Raz's voice, Talon moved forward. He stepped silently, smoothly, over the ground. Any trace of pain was inevident in his expression, he seemed fine. Violet eyes observed sharply when Raz glanced down at her hand. He remembered back to the palm-reader, how Raz had been so unwilling. Not that he hadn't either. He had left, after all, right after Raz let her hand out.

It was now that he too stapped forward to her slowly, deliberately, until they were just under an arms length apart. He opened his smooth, pale hand to her, catching her gaze so his intentions would be evident. There was something on that hand. He wanted to see it. He did not know or care if whatever it was would have meaning to him, but at least he would have seen it. Maybe she herself had an explanation. He wouldn't know.

Irrationally, Raz shuffled a bit away from the mysterious foreigner. The look in his eyes held his intent, and though it was determination to see her palm, she refused to offer it willingly. Raz knew- or hoped- that the mute man would more than likely understand the little quiggle no more than she did, but an unnamed fear kept Raz's hands fisted at her sides.

"I know you can't understand me, but... Ugh, just back off! This is my hand, and- What are you doing?!"

((Lol. I dunno. Just having fun, I guess xD))

For a moment, Talon stood unmoving. He locked his gaze with hers, and kept his arm extended. After a few seconds he seemed to get the message, dropped his arm, and lowered himself next to the empty firepit in the center of the tents. After arranging himself comfortably, he glanced up casually, a blase gleam in his eyes, as if to tell her to carry on like before. Any of his previous intensity has dissapated, and while he was never one for an easygoing demeanor, this was about as light as he got.

Raz eased herself back unto the ground, watching his with a peculiar expression on her face. She hadn't expected him to give up so quickly, let alone act as if nothing had happened.

    Boy submissive, The fire mused.

Raz couldn't stifle her giggle, or her reply, "Not quite." Luckily, Talon would not understand her words. Raz was sure he already thought her crazy anyway.

With a cat-like mewl and a nice long stretch, Ra turned to her companion and attempted to communicate, speaking slowly and loudly, as if to a deaf child, "We are go-ing..." She waved her hands around widly, miming walking, "To my home..." After a moment of hesitation she hugged herself to indicate 'home', "So I can hunt down..." Raz pretending to string a bow and take aim, tracking an invisible target, "My family's murderer." These last few words Raz didn't bother to try and translate. She wasn't sure if she wanted tell Talon- or, rather, make him realize
((through another interpretive dance)) what had happened.

((Teehee I've initiated you into the DOUBLE PARENTHESIS!!!)))

An amused expression crossed Talon's face. It was easy to tell he was enjoying this. Above his mask, his cheeks rose just slightly, as if a hint of a smile had crossed his hidden lips. All the same, he seemed to concentrate on her words. When she was finished, he thought them over for a minute, then shrugged and stood, barely pausing to hesitate and brush his hand thoughtfully across his chest, where his torn tunic occasionally revealed a glimpse of pale, almost perfect skin.

Spinning, he offered Raz his hand to help her stand, though he knew she didn't need it. It would be the polite thing to do, he supposed. After doing so, he disappeared into one of the tents, barely starting to tug off his cloak before he was out of sight.

Raz's fingers tingled where he touched as the foreigner disappeared into the tent. Her cheeks flushed from the sight of skin- he had skin! Underneath his stupid cloack he actually had a nice body and some very, very nice skin!

The fire thrummed in her gut, a steady reminder of how long it had been since she had enjoyed a man's company. Thoughts of friends and druken escapades and the aftertaste of a fight brought a wide grin to Raz's face. At the thought of her friends vague plan began to form in her mind- go back, check for clues, then head off to the Black Market. With her mind made up, Raz skipped her way to her bath to prepare herself for bed.

By sundown, Talon had emerged, the tear in his cloak mended. A traveller had to be prepared, after all. Calm and stoic as ever before, he lit a fire in the pit and set himself down, sitting against the barrier around it. In the dirt beside him he drew a picture of the sunrise, leaving it there for Raz to see when she returned to ready herself for sleep. Having just rested for two days himself, he planned to keep watch.

Raz returned from her bath fully doused and content. Her fingers were pruny, her skin was flushed, her hair a soaking, and a wide grin lit her whole face. It was nice to be clean.

Her good mood continued when she came back to camp to fnid a little scribble sunrise in the sand. So cute! she thought.

Days begin again, the fire replied. Today ends.

Sleep converged on Raz, and she threw heself beside the flickering embers of their camp bonfire. A hand sat in the warmth of the flames, her whole body relaxed at the gentle burn of her good friend. "Goodnight," she murmured, only half awake.

Talon eyed Raz's burning hand warily. He knew she was a Ruiken, and it didn't hurt her, but it disgruntled him all the same to see a human sleeping so soundly while being... sizzled. He heard her speak, but he knew it was not to him. This was not the first time she had talked to seemingly nobody, but the way she spoke made him feel there was somebody--another presence. He mulled over these thoughts for almost two hours before it struck him.

    She speaks to the flames.

He shifted around fully so the girl was in full view. This realization, though it might seem strange, did not bother him too much. Talopn had seen enough oddities in his life to remain unbothered by such details. He spent the rest of the night waiting for morning with open, alert ears, watching the flames and wondering what mysteries they held, what personality it had. Perhaps he would find away to ask Raz sometime.

Raz woke up giggling at the little tickle of the fire against her fingertips. Only when it nipped at her arms playfully did she stifled her laughter and admonished it. The playful flames died down, growling with their ever-present hunger. With a nice long yawn and a sigh, Raz streched and clambered to her feet, strapping her golden sword to her waiste and slipping on her boots. What to do, what to do...? Maybe take another bath...? Eh, why not.

Raz removed the boots which she had only just put on and wandered down to the watering hole. I might as well savor being clean while I can.

Still sitting awake, Talon eyed the girl warily as she giggled in her dozing. When she got up and kicked off her boots, he almost rolled his eyes. How long were they going to stay in this place? He knew he needn't stick around, that Quill had been his anchor, but where else had he to go? He might as well accompany Raz. She did seem to have an interesting story about her--it might make travels that much more interesting.

Though, with the way things were going now, he wondered if she was ever going to head out. They were rested enough, what was the point in procrastinating?

Raz dipped a timid toe into the water before slipping in, ony midly annoyed by the temperature. When she had settled herself in the little pool she closed her eyes and tugged at the heat in the air, drawing it closer and poking at it until the water around her began to bubble and snap.

"Mmmm...." She grinned and submerged a burning finger, delighting in the sound of the sizzle that her fire made at the contact with the boiling liquid.

Wet. The fire spat, and Raz laughed, momentarily forgetting the sickness of her stomach left over from her dreams.

Fears stirred in the back of her mind, thoughts of her destination crept out of their cage and began to invade her peace. Razelle Decile did not run from a fight, from her fears, but these terrors she could not confront nor escape. They wore the faces of her loved ones, blank in death. They waited until she slept and then attacked her when her gaurd was at it lowest. They haunted her birthplace and they haunted her the nearer she got to her origins. She was well aware of Talon's annoyance at their delay. She was sure he was quite ready to pack up and move on, but poor Raz wished to prolong their stay in the tiny oasis for as long as possible.

After being what seemed like fatally stabbed, dragged to an abandoned Ruiken village, remaining unconscious for days, then sitting up all night and STILL not preparing to leave, Talon was feeling mildly irritable. What was up with this chick?

Deciding to take things into his own hands, he shuffled over to the fire and slowly put it out, then kicked around the dirt over it, covering up traces that it had ever been lit. Looking over the place one more time, he settled himself in front of one of the old tent frames, resting his eyes but listening intently for Razelle's return.

With a long-suffering sigh, Raz determined a course of action and heaved herself out of the water. After drying herself thoroughly, she slipped into a fresh change of clothes and ran her now-squeaky clean fingers through her violently red hair.

"Guess we should head out tomorrow..." She muttered to herself.

The fire hummed back neutrally. Like Raz, it seemed torn between wanting to go home and wishing to run as far away from possible

Raz lazily dropped beside Talon, waving a hand and starting up the fire that he had only just put out. She was oblivious to this fact as she leaned back on her hands and stared into the sky.

"Soooo... Mr. Masked Mute Man..." Raz's fingers dug around in the sand as she searched for something to say, before she realized that the oblivious idiot beside her wouldn't understand her anyway, "Dammit, I'm going to go insane. I'm stuck with a foreigner who's as dumb as a rock, a dead Clan, and a pissed off King who I'm sure will give chase any day now..."

The fire cackled in its mocking way.

"Shut up, you." Raz muttered, adding more kindling and watching her old friend lap it up greedily. She smiled fondly for a moment, before snapping her attention to the cloaked man beside her, "Yo, Mute," She snapped her fingers in his face to emphasize that she wa speaking to him, in case he didn't get that, "We-" Raz pointed between them, "-are going-" Raz mimed walking with her finger "-at dawn." Raz waved her arms at the sky and faked a yawn, stretching, shaking out her hair, and pretending to wake up. She prayed to Azra he got some of that, because the gods knew she didn't have enough patience to repeat herself.

Talon almost smiled, though whether he had or not it wouldn't have shown under his mask. Leaning forward, he put his hand beside hers in the dirt, and outlined a picture of the sunrise, like he had done a few days ago. Looking back at her, he nodded, then rose to his feet, going to unbury the fire he had just put out. Regrettably. But hey, at least they'd be leaving soon.

Inwardly, a few questions flipped thorugh his mind about Razelle's past. He wasn't one to press details, and he didn't mind not knowing. He himself tended to be rather secretive about his origins. All the same, he was curious. Now that he'd seen her world, he was interested. Perhaps that was his reason for staying.
Seeing as it was still relatively daytime, he retreived throwing knives from the inside of his cloak, moving toward the edge of the main clearing, where he got in some target practice on one of the old tent frames.

Raz huffed as she watched her- her what? Partner? Companion? Mute burden?- sling dagger after dagger with dangerous accuracy. For a minute she considered his skill and their situation, and with a sigh she determined that he might be useful after all. "Not so good for my sanity, though." The redhead muttered. Indeed, the cloaked asshole was driving her up the wall with his silent little smirks and lack of understanding.

The fire cackled in agreement, stretching to lap at her leg.
Raz cursed at the sudden tickle and kicked her friend away with a scowl. After another pause for thought Raz rolled onto her back and squinted at the setting sun. The temperature was cooling considerably, as it always did during the desert night, and the Ruiken allowed the flames to come closer. With her constant annoyed expression Raz huddled into the sand a determinedly willed herself to sleep.

With the setting sun, Talon settled himself by the fire, pulling his newly-mended cloak around him. He wanted to stay awake--after all, someone should keep watch--but it had been two or three full days since he had last slept, and there wasn't much need to stay awake after all. Within minutes after settling down, his eyes closed and he drifted off.

He was up with the dawn, wide awake, rested, and ready to move.

Raz woke to Talon bustling about soundlessly. For a long moment she just lay stiffly on the ground, watching him, before she determinedly rolled onto her feet. Sand nipped at her feet, the sun heated her face, but Raz felt nothing but cold. She was well aware of the fact that they'd make it to her home by nightfall, and the Ruik feared what she'd find.

Technically, she knew what would be there: An untouched Silk City, seemingly abandoned, the ashes of every one of her kinsman scattered across the desert- Raz had made sure to burn each and every one of them while muttering a little prayer.

With a long-suffering sigh and an annoyed look at her mute companion, Raz cracked her back, stretched out her arms, and slung her prepared pack over her shoulders. At her command their little fire extinguished and its heat gather about her hands and whispered its usual little temptations.

The redhead clapped to earn Talon's attention and sent him a questioning glance, :You ready to go?" At a prolonged silence, Raz slapped a hand over her forehead and gestured emphatically towards her feet, miming walking, "Come on you dumb...! UGH!"

Talon stared blankly for a moment, his eyes twinkling. Then he nodded, and gestured her to lead. After all, this was her little journey, her mission. He was just along for the ride.

As they first set out, cool air still swept across the desert, ruffling his cloak. He savored it while he could, knowing that the sun would soon bring stifling heat. Sure enough, the next few hours brought a rapid change in temperature. He could almost feel the land simmering under his feet, though it didn't bother him as much as when they first came, not that he showed it either way.

The was one of the things that made him a great companion, after all: He never complained.

Whenever the opportinuty arose, Talon disappeared. Every small gathering of desert flora, or vast outcropping of desert rock that they edged around, he would vanish into the depths. Sometimes, he wouldn't reappear until a few hours later. From the way his brow sometimes furrowed, one might think he was becoming frustrated. But solemn expression was just his way.

At first, he did wonder how far away Razelle's home city would be. For all he knew, they would be travelling to the southern edge of the Barren Lands. By nightfall, however, he saw the decimated skeleton of an abandoned--or plundered--silk city break the straight line of the dimming horizon. Still in the Gauri. At least they weren't straying too far south. He wasn't a big fan of the south.
